- Bauls are the original hipsters from Bangladesh (not India, not Pakistan, not Myanmar, but Bangla-effing-desh), the only difference is they don't show-off, drink expensive esoteric coffee blends or wear hard to find parkas with a thick scarf made from Mongolian bison or something. No, these guys are genuine mystics, wandering travelers and spiritual students of the great Lalon Shah. Sure, they do smoke a joint or two every now and then, but that isn't the only thing that makes their songs transcend beyond time and place. A mixture of religion, a pinch of humanity and a dash of local legends goes into making a proper baul song. Then again, it's incomplete without the human touch, that of someone ingrained in the Lalon philosophy.
